We are already facing environmental problems due to pollution, especially waste pollution, which significantly increases our health-related risks. This mandatory segregation is a first small step everyone could perform to be able to lessen our faced environmental crisis, which in turn also lessens health-related problems. Health and environmental effects of waste segregation are vital in improving the sustainability and livability of our world.
Target Population: All households in the area
Advantages:
- Both biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste can be dumped in their appropriate landfills without troubling the garbage collectors.
- It reduces health concerns by limiting the growth of pests and rodents.
- Because segregation encourages people to evaluate their waste before throwing it out, there are greater options for recycling.
- There will be a decrease in the amount of waste dumped in landfills.
- Methane production is decreased for biodegradables are not disposed of with non-biodegradables.
- Carbon footprints will be lessened, as well as the global warming effects.
- Less time and money will be spent on the garbage disposal industry, involving collecting, transportation, and disposal processes.
I do not see any drawbacks to implementing this policy, although I can foresee difficulties some people could have doing so. One is that it will bring a new technique to some that calls for people to make deliberate efforts. However, in light of all the benefits of waste segregation, I believe everyone could handle this tiny inconvenience.
In terms of implementation, I think this is already being utilized in our community, though not exactly to its fullest extent. However, I believe that everyone can accomplish this with the right supervision. We currently have the necessary equipment—two distinct garbage trucks, one for biodegradable waste and the other for non-biodegradable waste. To encourage complete engagement of the municipal citizens, our present municipal administration additionally supports several engaging waste segregation activities. Overall, I believe we must recognize that this policy is a need, and it is completely doable by every community.
