Maternal Morbidity and Mortality

Other than the factors discussed in the lecture, what do you think are other factors affecting maternal mortality rate in the Philippines?

  1. Lack of access available resources

The Philippines is a third world country. As such, there is a lack of medical resources available to pregnant women. Women are often forced to give birth without a health professional in attendance because they are difficult to reach. In the case of a difficult pregnancy, there is a lack of emergency resources available

  1. Culture around family planning

Bills such as the RH Bill of 2012 received a lot of flack from the Filipino community. When family planning methods are looked down upon, parents are more likely to engage in acts of sex without protection, leading to more unwanted and unplanned pregnancies.

What are the top 3 causes of maternal mortality ratio in the Philippines? Top 3 maternal morbidity?

Top 3 causes of maternal mortality ratio:

  1. Complications related to pregnancy occuring in the course of labor, delivery and puerperium (38.4%)

  2. Hypertension complicating pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium (35.2%)

  3. Postpartum hemorrhage (17.3%)

Top 3 maternal morbidity:

  1. Hemorrhage (31%)

  2. Infection (19%)

  3. Unsafe Abortion (16%)
