In response to Making Pregnancy Safer, what are the current programs in the country to address maternal mortality and morbidity? Cite at least 1.

  • The National Safe Motherhood program aims to improve mothers' health and well-being by collaborating with local health units to ensure the provision of sustainable, cost-effective delivery of health services to all women, training and updating current knowledge of doctors, nurses and midwives and implementing support materials (i.e. PCPNC, BEmONC, Maternal Death Reporting and Review System). In doing so, the program safeguards safe pregnancy and childbirth which helps accelerate the reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity.

What can you suggest to decrease our maternal mortality and morbidity in the country? Give at least 3 suggestions.

  • One of the causes of high maternal mortality and morbidity in the country is unsafe abortion which occurs due to unwanted pregnancy. Perhaps, strengthening the sex education delivered to younger generations may help them manage their sexual health safely. Second, creating a more open-minded environment for the younger generation as they understand their body changes and manage their sexual health allows them to seek health care services openly. This is because if society passes judgement on teenage pregnancies, there is a delay in seeking health care services, thereby, increasing the risk for maternal mortality and morbidity. During pregnancy, the provision of prenatal care highly influences the outcomes of pregnancy therefore it is important that new mothers/mothers seek them as early as possible. Lastly, strict implementation of programs in health care services that are based on reducing maternal mortality and morbidity may also help us achieve SDG 3 by 2030.
