Discuss how preconception care contributes to healthy pregnancy and positive pregnancy outcomes.

Fetal and obstetrical complications are related to gestational nutritional adequacy and exposure to toxicants. In preconception care, it is introduced that the deficiency of nutrient intake of a women and exposure to toxic substances can significantly influences the growth and development of the baby. Deficiency of particular nutrients results to chromosomal abnormalities and chemical exposure instigate genetic mutation. This proves the claim that diseases and illnesses are result of interaction between our genes and environment. Modifiable environmental factors such as maternal occupational exposure, electrical exposure, and household and vehicle exposure affects both the mother and the baby – though sometimes, it is more severe on the fetal part. Preconception care emphasizes the importance of health-seeking behaviors to reduce the risk of preterm labor and fetal complications. The woman’s awareness on the effects of these determinants – nutritional intake and toxicity exposure – will help both of them to complete the whole conception process without complications.
