“Good Nutrition is a foundation of a child’s survival, health, and development”.

What are your insights on this quote?

Indeed, good nutrition is vital for the life of a child. I believe that this definitely serves as the foundation as they grow and develop, their health, and ultimately, their survival. Without this, health problems that affects their physical, mental, and social well-being may arise. Good nutrition especially during the first 1000 days is essential and sets the life of the child until he/she becomes an adult. It paves the way for their immunization from the exclusive breastfeeding from birth up to 6 months. After this period, nutrients from various food sources during complementary feeding until the transition to pure table food also help for the healthy growth and brain development of children.

Unfortunately, good nutrition is still one of health issues we are facing today. As time goes by, instant foods are becoming a trend as it is much accessible and easier to prepare than whole foods. Feeding children with these deprives them of the essential nutrients that they should obtain from whole foods which will help them to lead a healthy growth and development. As student nurses, I believe that we should be advocates of good nutrition of children. We should not just provide mothers or the ones that provide a home for the children with health education, but also be part of strengthening the policies and programs created to address this health issue.
