- Pre existing health conditions such as anemia, malaria, sexually transmitted infections, etc. are factors that increase the risk for complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
- Early pregnancies in adolescent girls may also be a factor affecting the maternal mortality rate as their bodies are still developing which puts them and their child at higher risks.

Causes of Maternal Mortality (DOH, 2010)
1. Complications related to pregnancy occurring in the course of labor, delivery and puerperium (38.4%)
2. Hypertension complicating pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium (35.2%)
3. Postpartum hemorrhage (17.3%)
