1. Other than the factors discussed in the lecture, what do you think are other factors affecting maternal mortality rate in the Philippines?

  • Pre existing health conditions such as anemia, malaria, sexually transmitted infections, etc. are factors that increase the risk for complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Early pregnancies in adolescent girls may also be a factor affecting the maternal mortality rate as their bodies are still developing which puts them and their child at higher risks.

2. What are the top 3 causes of maternal mortality ratio in the Philippines? Top 3 maternal morbidity?

Causes of Maternal Mortality (DOH, 2010)

1. Complications related to pregnancy occurring in the course of labor, delivery and puerperium (38.4%)

2. Hypertension complicating pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium (35.2%)

3. Postpartum hemorrhage (17.3%)

Causes of Maternal Morbidity

1. Hemorrhage (31%)

2.Infection (19%)

3. Unsafe abortion (16%)
