  1. Other than the factors discussed in the lecture, what do you think are other factors affecting maternal mortality rate in the Philippines?

Aside from the antenatal care, delivery care, and postpartum care, other factors that increase the mother’s risk for complications in pregnancy which eventually lead to death includes medical conditions such as anemia, diabetes, malaria, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Moreover, the presence of management for certain medical conditions which may complicate pregnancy and the mother’s capability to implement this management can also affect the maternal mortality rate in our country. Also, mistimed, unplanned, unwanted and unsupported pregnancy can contribute to maternal mortality.

  • Complications related to pregnancy occurring on the course of labor, delivery, and puerperium

  • Hypertension complicating pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium

  • Postpartum hemorrhage
