  1. In response to Making Pregnancy Safer, what are the current programs in the country to address maternal mortality and morbidity? Cite at least 1.

The National Safe Motherhood program implemented by DOH with the vision for Filipino women to have their pregnancy healthier and safer through having full access to health services. The mission of this program, on the other hand, aims to provide rational and responsive policy direction to its local partners for the delivery of quality maternal and infant healthcare services.

  1. What can you suggest in order to decrease our maternal mortality and morbidity in the country? Give at least 3 suggestions.

Based on the factors that contribute to the numbers of maternal mortality and morbidity, what I can suggest are the wide dissemination of health information, strengthening the programs for maternity health, and continued application of evidence based care.

  • Wide dissemination of health information - For me, there is still a lack of health education in the general public despite the technologies we have today. I think that promoting family planning among prospective parents will be helpful to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality numbers in a way that both parties involved will plan and prepare for pregnancy. In short, being educated will pave the way for implementing necessary changes to pave the way for healthy and safer pregnancy.

  • Strengthening programs for maternity health - Since there is still a rise in the rates of maternal mortality and morbidity, the current programs do not sufficiently address the goal to reduce these numbers which means there is still a need to improve the programs implemented. We need to strengthen the policies for local partners of the DOH and the local partners to be equipped with necessary equipment and materials to implement these policies.

  • Continued application of evidence based care - In addition with strengthening programs for maternal health, inclusion of continued application of evidence based care is a strong factor that will contribute to the success of reducing maternal mortality and morbidity numbers as these practices provide most efficient care.
