Respectful maternity care during labor and childbirth and associated factors among women who gave birth at health institutions in the West Shewa zone, Oromia region, Central Ethiopia
Bulto, et al. (2020) described Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) as an individual-centered approach based on ethical and human-rights principles that encourages methods that consider women's preferences as well as women's and babies' needs. By asking questions related to RMC, only 35.8% of the 267 mothers who fully responded in the research said that they received RMC. With this being said, we can say that in countries with high poverty rates, there is a big chance that women are not receiving the RMC. In relation to this, it is probable that Philippines might be experiencing the same gravity of the problem as we consider that there are less healthcare professionals working in the community and hospitals, and the low focus of government in our healthcare funding.
The recommendations given by the paper were giving emphasis to creating awareness of care providers on the standards and categories of RMC. As a nursing student who were taught about this, it is our responsibility to practice this and to advocate for other mothers not receiving it. It was also said that there should be an improvement on care provider-client discussion. This is very important for nurses since in giving care to our clients, we try to respect their views and culture. This is also important to provide autonomy to our clients. Lastly, they are recommending the monitoring and reinforcing accountability mechanisms for health workers to avoid mistreatments during labor and childbirth were recommended. This is very important to avoid bad outcomes due to insufficient focus on providing care to our clients.
