  1. Other than the factors discussed in the lecture, what do you think are other factors affecting the maternal mortality rate in the Philippines?

  • Other factors that increase maternal mortality
    • Not giving importance to sex education

      • One of the top causes of maternal mortality and morbidity is unsafe abortion. People who are susceptible to unsafe abortion are adolescents who had unwanted pregnancies. It is therefore integral to the reduction of maternal mortality that the educational system incorporates and holds sex education of equal importance as that of other subjects taught in school. In this way, teenagers are knowledgeable about family planning methods which may help reduce the incidence of unwanted pregnancies and, consequently, unsafe abortions. Alongside integrating reproductive health into national strategies, the education sector should provide updated and adequate sex education to the younger generation.

    • Lack of skilled nurses/midwives

      • The brain drain situation of skilled nurses and midwives in our country deprives our healthcare system of being able to provide quality care to Filipinos. Skilled nurses and midwives are vital to facilitating safe labour and delivery of the baby. Additionally, they educate women and highlights the importance of antenatal and postnatal care.

    • Insufficient facilities

      • The DOH created a report and a plan that will help improve the healthcare system in the Philippines. Among its highlights includes the need to increase the number of hospital beds, adding 400,000 to meet the projected hospital care by 2040. Without accessible facilities throughout the country, mothers are unable to sustain the care their pregnancy requires (i.e. antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum) which increases maternal mortality and morbidity.

  1. What are the top 3 causes of maternal mortality ratio in the Philippines? Top 3 maternal morbidity?

  • Top 3 causes of maternal mortality ratio:
    1. Eclampsia (16% of total maternal deaths)

    2. Gestational hypertension with significant proteinuria (14.7% of total maternal deaths)

    3. Other maternal diseases that complicate pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium (10% of total maternal deaths).

  • Top 3 maternal morbidity:
    1. Haemorrhage (31%)

    2. Infection (19%)

    3. Unsafe abortion (16%)
