Pregnancy entails crucial processes for the normal and healthy development of a human being. It is only right that preconception care be a priority of many individuals to ensure a healthy pregnancy and gain positive pregnancy outcomes. Genuis and Genuis (2016) stated how recent evidence affirms the role of modifiable environmental factors to illness. This implies that our genomes are affected by modifiable determinants in our environment.

With this, preconception care is crucial and must be given attention to by women more especially in child bearing age. Preconception care is defines as the care of women before conceiving a child (Genuis & Genuis, 2016). This is an important aspect to one’s health because it ensures that a woman is exposed to a healthy environment away from toxins, teratogens, and hazard; is receiving the recommended amount of vitamins and minerals daily; is making informed and healthy decisions about one’s lifestyle and eating habits; and is taking steps towards a healthy pregnancy.

With a well established and implemented preconception care, a woman will receive the vital information about how she can take care of herself well even before conceiving a child. She will know what environmental factors to avoid, what actions to take for a better health, and what health decisions must be done to optimize her health before pregnancy. Indeed, preconception care plays a very important role to one’s health because it prepares a woman for pregnancy. It leads to healthier pregnancies with positive outcomes.
