- Other than the factors discussed in the lecture, what do you think are other factors affecting maternal mortality rate in the Philippines?
- Aside from the social determinants discussed in the lecture, other factors that contribute to the increasing maternal mortality rate in the Philippines include existing pre-pregnancy health conditions. Health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity are also prevalent in the country, having these conditions during pregnancy increases the risk of complications leading to maternal death. Additionally, lifestyle and environmental factors may contribute to maternal death such as cigarette smoking and air pollution which is also pervasive in the country and also poses harmful effects to not only the fetus but also the pregnant woman. With this, it is important that we highlight the essence of healthy eating, lifestyle and environment for women of reproductive age and pregnant women in order to reduce high risk pregnancies that leads to maternal mortality.
