Weekly outline

  • Integrated Faculty Development Program (Research)

Welcome to the Integrated Faculty Development Program (IFDP) Research Module.  This site was created to address the needs of faculty members who are required to complete the IFDP program.  This was designed so the faculty can take the course online and at his / her own pace.  The lectures are provided to allow asynchronous viewing.

The objectives of the module are as follows:  At the end of the module, the faculty is expected to:

    • Discuss the value of research as an integral part of teaching, and professional growth
    • Describe the sources of research questions and to formulate different types of research questions using the PECO format
    • Conduct efficient literature searches for research and clinical questions
    • Determine the appropriate research design given the objectives of research
    • Discuss the basic principles of data analysis and data management
    • Describe the organizational structure and set-up of research in the university
    • Describe the available research-related resources in the university

The module is divided into two parts:

Part 1 : How to get started on your research

Part 2: How to navigate the research maze in UP Manila.

Upon completion of the two parts, the faculty will receive a certificate of completion.  Part 1 is completed by submitting exercises that are required for each topic.  Part 2 is completed by watching all videos and completing and passing a quiz after all the videos have been viewed.

  • The role of research in faculty promotion and tenure

This is a lecture-orientation  by Associate Dean for faculty and students: Dr. Ma Liza Antoinette M. Gonzales that discusses the qualifications of the faculty for entry into the college and the requirements for promotion and tenure.

  • Formulating the Research Question

This is a lecture on the framework for the formulation of a research question.  The components of the research question include P-population, patient or problem, E - exposure, C - comparison exposure (if applicable) and O - outcome

  • How to do an efficient literature search

This lecture will discuss how the research question may be used as a framework for conducting an efficient literature search using Pubmed. The lecture includes a demonstration.

  • Choosing a study design

This section will go over the different clinical study designs and the research questions that these study designs will address.

  • Biases in research and how these should be addressed

This lecture will discuss the most important biases in research : selection bias, performance bias, attrition and exclusion bias and detection and measurement bias.

  • Statistical and sample size considerations

This lecture (by Prof Cynthia Cordero) discusses the important considerations in describing and analyzing data and sample size considerations.

  • The Role of RGAO in UP Manila Research

This is a lecture on the Role of RGAO in UP Manila Research by Dr. Mark Sandoval

  • The Role of UPMREB in UP Manila

Lecture by Dr. Jojo Mantaring on the Role of UPMREB in UP Manila and how to make a UPMREB submission.

  • How to Make a submission to Acta Philippina

Dr. Joven Tanchuco did not submit a lecture on how to make a submission to the Acta Medica Philippina.  Instead he referred the learners to the Acta Medica Philippina Website.

  • How to claim your certificate of completion

For part 1 of the IFDP module, you will receive a certificate of completion once you have completed the assignments for each of the lectures.  Because this is asynchronous, you will have to request for access to each the activities by posting a message to the administrator of this site with the subject: "request for access to ...".  For example, Request for access to the activity on research question formulation.  Once access has been given, simply complete the activity which may be a quiz or an assignment that requires submission of an output.

For part 2 of the IFDP module, once you complete all the lectures, you will have to request access to a multiple choice quiz that will ask questions for each of the lectures for part 2.

Once you answer the quiz, you will the receive a certification of completion of the IFDP module on reasearch.
