Pharma 254 is an elective course offered to MD-Ph.D students.  It will run for 4 hours a day (M,W, F) for a total of 40 hours spanning June 20, 2022 to August 6, 2022 for the summer of AY 2021 - 2022.  Ethnopharmacology integrates aspects of ecology, systematic botany, natural products chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, anthropology and medicine. The discipline explores human interactions with potential medicinal plants (and other natural sources) as medicines, poisons, and intoxicants with a primary focus on Filipino endemic and indigenous plants.  The subject will differentiate alternative and integrative medicines and the 10 plants that have been identified by DOH as essential.  This elective allows students to appreciate contemporary issues, diverse perspectives, and ethical, commercial and legal issues pertaining to the ownership of indigenous knowledge, intellectual property, species regulation, biopiracy and genetic resources.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still on the rise, the course will be remote learning, both synchronous and asynchronous, through virtual platforms that require work sheets, reporting, online meeting and videos, so that students with low, moderate, or high internet connectivity can be given adequate access for online learning. Platforms such as google drive and zoom be utilized for these purposes.  For students with difficult accessing the internet, flash drive with the downloaded readings and printable work sheets will be provided.  A digital (file or thumb drive) and course pack (soft copies) will be available to students and must contain the following:

  1. Pharma 254 Course Guide with a detailed syllabus.
  2. Learning resources (Video lectures, readings, other multimedia and content resources)
