Methods in isolating and characterizing proteins
There are several ways in which proteins are isolated or characterized. The list can be extensive, however, we will be focusing our lesson on the general workflow for protein isolation and the two main ways of isolating or characterizing a protein - electrophoresis and adsorption chromatography.Β
When we say to isolate, it means that from a cell, which is a combination of different biomolecules, we can extract our proteins from that and hopefully purify them to get the target protein only.Β
When we say to characterize, we mean to have an idea of what the protein is, such as its size (also known as molecular weight) and its charge.
