EBM Concept: Statistical Significance

Another important concept to understand when appraising results is "significant difference." When do we say that the results of a study are significant?  "Statistically significant" means that the the difference in the observed effects between the 2 treatment groups that was demonstrated by the results of the study was not due to chance but is a true difference between the groups being compared.  We need to remember, though, that statistically significant differences may not necessarily equate to clinically important differences.  Thus, it is important for us to appraise whether the results of the study translate to actual clinical benefit for our patients.
