N391: Quantitative Research Methods (AY 2024-2025)

Kindly search for a critical appraisal tool or reporting guideline for the following quantitative research designs (based on your assignments in the critical appraisal activity):

1.    Cross-sectional / Descriptive / Predictive

2.    Case control

3.    Prospective / Retrospective Cohort

4.    Randomized controlled trial

5.    Quasi-experimental

6.    Implementation research 

Instructions:

1. There may be different checklists/guidelines from various research organizations. Hence, you can choose one that you think best fits the research design assigned to you.

2. Read and analyze the critical appraisal tool/reporting guideline and present to the class the salient points of the research design it assesses. Most tools would have an accompanying published article detailing the contents of the checklist, for your reference. 

3. Prepare to present the tool/guideline in class on Sept 19.

A. Keep the presentation within 10 minutes. 

B. Comment also if there are other aspects that might need to be included or not included in the tool.

3. Post the critical appraisal tool/reporting guideline here for everyone’s reference (on or before Sept 19, 12NN) and properly cite the reference (APA style).

4. You can use the tool/s to facilitate the Critical Appraisal of Quantitative Research Designs on Oct 10/17.

Notes: There may be similar checklists for both (1) cross-sectional or observational studies and (2) prospective and retrospective cohort studies. Hence, the students assigned to these designs should search different tools to present to the class.
