1. How does the food change in consistency and form?
Food is first chewed in the mouth, wherein bolus, or a ball-like, solid mixture of broken down food and saliva is created. It is then swallowed, and passes through the esophagus. It then enters the stomach and is churned, creating chyme, which is a a partly fluid substance made of gastric juices and digested food. It then enters the small intestine, where nutrients are absorbed. Next, it enters the large intestine, wherein other substances are absorbed, and creating feces. The feces will be stored in the rectum until it is ready for elimination.
2. How could the body absorb the nutrients from the foods we eat?
The small intestine, where nutrient absorption occurs, there are small projections called villi, which are in turn connected to capillaries. The nutrients are then able to be absorbed into the blood, and distributed throughout the body.
