How does the food change in consistency and form?
The process of food changing its consistency and form starts when the food is broken down in the mouth and mixed with saliva, making a soft bolus. It is churned into a semi-liquid mix called chyme by the stomach and acts of gastric juices. In the small intestine, it is further broken down by enzymes and bile into simpler nutrients for absorption.
How could the body absorb the nutrients from the foods we eat?
The villi absorb nutrients appearing as a tiny finger-like projections in the small intestine which then shuttle the acquired nutrients into the bloodstream or lymphatic system for distribution to the body cells. The large intestine absorbs water and minerals, and the residual waste is eliminated.
