5 Affected muscles and actions:

  1. Frontalis: Raises eyebrows and creates wrinkles on forehead
  2. Orbicularis oculi: Closes eyelids
  3. Orbicularis oris: Closes, protrudes, and compresses lips
  4. Platysma: Depresses mandible and tenses neck skin
  5. Occipitofrontalis: Lifts eyebrows, pulls scalp, creates horizontal lines on forehead forward.

Mechanism of muscle weakness: Bell's palsy causes the nerve responsible for facial control, which functions through a narrow canal to the face, to swell, usually from infection, affecting tears, saliva, taste, and other bones and muscles.

Other symptoms:

  1. Drooling
  2. Difficulty in smiling
  3. Difficulty in eating/drinking
  4. Headache
  5. Loss of taste
