Name the muscle that may cause the following facial expression and write down its origin, insertion and action.

  1. Platysma

  • Origin: Fascia overlying the pectoralis major and deltoid muscles

  • Insertion: Inferior border of the mandible

  • Action: Lowers the bottom lip and pulls down the corners of the mouth

Mentalis

  • Origin: Mandible's incisive fossa

  • Insertion: Skin on the chin

  • Action: Pushes the lower lip outward

Orbicularis Oris

  • Origin: Upper jaw (maxilla) and lower jaw (mandible)

  • Insertion: Skin at the sides of the mouth

  • Action: Puckering the lips

Corrugator Supercilii

  • Origin: Bony ridge above the eye (superciliary arch of the frontal bone)

  • Insertion: Skin above the eyebrow, near the orbital ridge

  • Action: Draws the eyebrows together, creating vertical forehead wrinkles

Orbicularis Oculi

  • Origin: Inner portion of the eye socket (medial orbital wall)

  • Insertion: Forms a circular structure around the eye

  • Action: Closes the eyelids

  • Origin: Epicranial aponeurosis

  • Insertion: Skin just above the eyebrows

  • Action: Wrinkles the forehead skin and lifts the eyebrows
