Site of injection: Anterolateral thigh

Target muscle: Vastus lateralis

  • Origin: Greater trochanter of femur
  • Insertion: Patella, tibial tuberosity
  • Action: Extension of knee

How to locate: Search for the muscle between the greater trochanter and the lateral condyle of the femur. Divide the muscle into three and deliver the vaccine on the middle third of the muscle, on the anterolateral aspect lateral to the midpoint of the thigh.

Site of injection: Lateral region of upper arm

Target muscle: Deltoid muscle

  • Origin: Clavicle, scapula
  • Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
  • Action: Abduction of arm at shoulder joint

How to locate: Search for the lateral edge of the scapula then trace an inverted triangular region. Injection site is in the middle of the inverted triangular region, 3-5 cm below the scapula.
