Target Muscle: Vastus lateralis
Origin: Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur.
Insertion: Patella via quadriceps tendon and then tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament.
Action: Extend leg at knee joint.
How to locate: Position the infant to access the thigh. Find the upper outer thigh and locate the injection site in the middle third between the knee and hip. Palpate the well-developed vastus lateralis muscle for the injection.
2. Influenza vaccine for a 65-year-old grandfather
Sites of Injection: Deltoid muscle in the upper arm
Target Muscle: Deltoid
Origin: Acromial extremity of clavicle (anterior fibers), acromion of scapula (lateral fibers), and spine of scapula (posterior fibers).
Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus.
Action: Lateral fibers cause abduction; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm
How to locate: Have the patient seated or lying down with their arm relaxed. Locate the acromion process at the top of the shoulder, and administer the injection in the middle of the deltoid muscle, about 2-3 fingerbreadths below the acromion process..
