1. Platysma

Origin: Fascia over the clavicle, pectoralis major, and deltoid muscles

Insertion: Inferior border of mandible and skin of lower face

Action: pulling down the mandible, pulling the corners of the lips to the side and down, forms wrinkles in the neck with age.

 

2. Mentalis

Origin: Incisive fossa of the mandible

Insertion: Skin of the lower lip

Action: Raise the skin of the chin and elevate, evert, and protrude the lower lip

 

 3. Orbicularis oris

Origin: Medial aspects of maxilla and mandible, perioral skin and muscles, modiolus

Insertion: Skin and mucous membrane of lips

Action: Closes mouth, compresses and protrudes lips

 

 4. Corrugator supercilii

Origin: Medial end of superciliary arches, Fibers of orbicularis oculi muscle

Insertion: Skin above middle of supraorbital margin

Action: Creates vertical wrinkles over glabella

 

5. Orbicularis oculi

Origin: Nasal part of frontal bone, frontal process of maxilla, medial palpebral ligament, lacrimal bone

Insertion: Skin of orbital region, lateral palpebral raphe, superior and inferior tarsal plates

Action: Closes eyelids, compresses lacrimal sac

 

 6. Frontalis or the Frontal Belly of the Occipitofrontalis/Epicranius muscle

Origin: Epicranial aponeurosis

Insertion: Skin of the eyebrows

Action: Elevates eyebrows, wrinkles forehead, and pulls the scalp forward.
