  1. How does the food change in consistency and form?

The consistency and form of the food changes as it passes through the digestive system. First, food is chewed and mixed with saliva creating the bolus. Bolus is formed to enable the food to be passed down to the pharynx and towards the stomach. Then, after the food has been processed it is turned into chyme which is similar to heavy cream. Lastly, as the chyme passes through the small intestine and arrives at the large intestine it will absorb water from the food and eliminate it as feces.

  1. How could the body absorb the nutrients from the foods we eat?

The small intestine and large intestine are responsible for absorption of nutrients in our body. The small intestine has brush border enzymes in order to break down into simple sugars and complete protein digestion. Moreover, bile and pancreatic enzymes are also involved to digest fat, nucleic acids, and starch. On the other hand, the large intestine is only responsible for absorbing remaining water, vitamin K and some b vitamins. The absorbed nutrients will be placed into circulation and give the nutrients to body cells.
