I find it really interesting how our body essentially has a criminal database of its own via the Adaptive Immune System, and how vaccines are probably one of the forefronts of infection control in public health that unfortunately, people take for granted.

Adaptive immunity goes hand in hand with our Humoral Immunity as it is typically centered around antigens and antibodies. Antigens are Membrane proteins found in cells. B Cells are types of lymphocytes that recognize foreign antibodies, and produce antibodies to fight off the infection. Once the B Cell recognizes and identifies a foreign antigen as a threat, they multiply in order to fight off the infection (Effector B Cells), and keep a record of it in case of a future infection (Memory B Cells).

This is where vaccines come in. Our B cells recognize the weakened pathogen, and immediately create antibodies for it, ready to fight off a real infection.

It is very disheartening that we have seen a great mass of people rallying against vaccines, especially during the pandemic where inoculation is paramount to fight off the ever-growing infections. We have taken for granted how much vaccines have helped our society in combating health crises like this, and how much vaccines have changed the face of public health. The COVID-19 pandemic was quite short, and not as deadly as a large majority of health crises in this scale, thanks to vaccines. This is why, just like our immune system, we remember our history, in order to prevent crises like the pandemic from happening again.
