Major histocompatibility complex antigens help in the recognition of foreign antigen. These are like markings for the immune system. If any of the markings are abnormal, a tell-tale sign of a hijacked or sick cell, the immune system will recognize the abnormality and proceed to kill the cell. It is also how the immune system know when there is a cancer cell. Knowing that the fate of these abnormal cells is apoptosis or death, I should always use sunscreen if I am going to be under the sun for awhile as UV radiation destroys cell DNA and increases the risk for cancer. These damaged cells are then going to be eliminated by the immune system. By using sunscreen, I can minimize the damage from the UV rays so less cells are affected and I can lessen the work of my immune system.
