Facial (VII) Nerves control a mix of both sensory and motor functions, namely, taste, proprioception, touch, pain, temperature sensations for sensory function, and facial expression, secretions of tears and saliva for motor functions. Given that the patient is no longer able to control or execute the majority of these functions, it is clear that the viral infection's impact on the facial nerves is what is causing her symptoms.
