  1. Injection for infant (Pneumococcal Vaccine): Vastus Lateralis muscle

-        Site of injection for infant (Pneumococcal Vaccine): vastus lateralis muscle in the anterolateral thigh in young children

-        Origin: Upper intertrochanteric line, base of greater trochanter, lateral linea aspera, lateral supracondylar ridge and lateral intermuscular septum

-        Insertion: Lateral quadriceps tendon to patella, via ligamentum patellae into tubercle of tibia

-        Action: At the knee, all four heads extend the leg, and the rectus femoris muscle, working by itself, also flexes the thigh at the hip.

-        Location: Position the patient lying down or being held by a parent to mark the vastus lateralis. Palpate the muscle just under the greater trochanter and just above the lateral femoral condyle (knee joint). Divide the muscle into thirds as the injection should be given into the middle third of the muscle, on the outside anterolateral aspect, lateral to the midline of the thigh.

-        Site of injection for infant (Pentavalent vaccine): anterolateral aspect of the mid-thigh

  1. Site of injection (IM injection): Vastus Lateralis or Deltoid

-        Origin: Acromion (acromial part), Spine of Scapula (spinal section), Lateral Third of Clavicle

-        Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus

-        Action: Arm flexion and internal rotation are performed by the clavicular portion. Abduction of the arm past the initial 15 degrees by the acromial portion and arm extension and external rotation are caused by the spine.

-        Location: 3-5 cm below acromion
