First Scenario

  • Sites of injection: Anterolateral aspect of the thigh
  • Muscle targeted: Vastus lateralis
    • Origin: Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur.
    • Insertion: Patella via quadriceps tendon and then tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
    • Action: Extend leg at knee joint
  • How to locate: Identify the middle third of the lateral thigh between the trochanter major and the knee

Second Scenario

  • Sites of injection: Deltoid muscle of the arm
  • Muscle targeted: Deltoid
    • OriginAcromial extremity of clavicle(anterior fibers), acromion ofscapula (lateral fibers), andspine of scapula (posterior fibers).
    • InsertionDeltoid tuberosity of humerus
    • ActionLateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint.
  • How to locate: Identify the acromion process where the head of the humerus articulates with the shoulder joint. Palpate the shoulder and place a finger at the dip/notch that forms  at the joint after the palpation.
