Activity 3
Patient: 2 month old female infant
Vaccinations: PCV, Penta and oral polio vaccine
Sites of injection: Anterolateral thigh
Target muscle: Vastus lateralis muscle
Origin, insertion, and action: Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur, patella via quadriceps tendon and then tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament, extend leg at knee joint
How to locate: Place palm over greater trochanter of the femur, facing the index finger and thumb towards the umbilicus, along the anterior iliac spine then place the middle finger towards the iliac crest, creating ‘V’ shape. Injection is in between of the ‘V’.

Patient: 65
Vaccinations: Flu vaccine
Preferred muscle: Deltoid muscle
Origin, insertion, and action: Acromial extremity of clavicle (anterior fibers), acromion of scapula (lateral fibers), and spine of scapula (posterior fibers), deltoid tuberosity of humerus, Lateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint
How to locate: Look for the acromion process, where the head of the humerus articulates with the shoulder joint which then can be palpated. If there are difficulties, have the patient extend their arm at 90 degrees and if the shoulder is palpated, there would be a dip formed at the joint. Place your finger there to palpate the acromion process.
