  1. Sites of injection : Thighs

Muscles Targeted: 
a. Vastus Lateralis

  • Origin: Upper aspect of the intertrochanteric line,  proximal portion of the lateral lip of the linear aspera

  • Insertion: Patella via quadriceps tendon and then tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament

  • Action: Extension of the leg at the knee

  • How to locate: Position the infant lying down or being held by a parent. Examine the muscle below the greater trochanter and above the lateral femoral condyle or knee joint. Divide the muscle into three and inject into the middle third of the muscle lateral to the midpoint of the thigh.

 

2. Site of the injection: Upper Arm

Muscle Targeted:
a. Deltoid

  • Origin:  Lateral ⅓ of clavicle, Acromion, Spine of scapula

  • Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus

  • Action: Flexion of the arm

  • How to locate: The patient should be sitting comfortably with their arm visible from the shoulder to the top of the elbow. The injection should be given at the center of imaginary inverted triangle with anatomical landmarks.
