Activity 3:

Situation no.1:

Preferred site of injection: Since the patient is a 2-month-old female infant, the preferred route of injection is through the anterolateral thigh, specifically the Vastus lateralis muscle.

Sites of injection: Anterolateral thigh

Targeted muscle in the injection: Vastus lateralis muscle

Origin: Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur.

Insertion: Tibial tuberosity through patellar ligament (tendon of quadriceps)

Action: Work with the other quad muscles to help extend knee joint, extend leg, and flexes thigh.

How do you locate the area?

In locating the vastus lateralis muscle, the female infant must be laid down or held by the parent. The muscle must be palpated below the greater trochanter and above the lateral femoral condyle (knee joint). Then, divide the muscle into thirds and administer injections into the middle third of the muscle in the outer anterolateral aspect, lateral to midpoint of the thigh.

Situation no. 2:

Preferred site of injection: Since the patient is a 65-year-old grandfather, the deltoid muscle of the arm is the most preferred site for injection.

Sites of injection: Deltoid muscle of the arm.

Targeted muscle in the injection: Deltoid

Origin: lateral part of the clavicle (collarbone), as well as the spine and acromion process of the scapula (shoulder blade)

Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus

Action: produce abduction of the Shoulder Joint:helps lift the arm front, side, and backward.

How do you locate the area?

In locating the Deltoid, the patient should be sitting comfortably with their arm visible from the shoulder to the top of the elbow. Feel the acromion and create an imaginary inverted triangle below the shoulder. The injection should be given 3-5 cm below the acromion, in the middle of the inverted triangle.
