  1. Site of injection for infant (Pneumococcal Vaccine): Vastus Lateralis muscle

    • Origin: Upper intertrochanteric line, base of greater trochanter, lateral linea aspera, lateral supracondylar ridge and lateral intermuscular septum

    • Insertion: Lateral quadriceps tendon to patella, via ligamentum patellae into tubercle of tibia

    • Action: Extends knee

    • Location: Palpate the muscle below the greater trochanter and above the lateral femoral condyle (knee joint). Divide the muscle into thirds and administer the injection into the middle third of the muscle, in the outer anterolateral aspect, lateral to the midpoint of the thigh.

  • Site of injection for infant (Pentavalent vaccine): anterolateral part of the thigh in children less than 2 years old

  • Site of injection for oral polio: mouth
  1. Site of injection (IM injection): Deltoid muscle

    • Origin: Lateral third of clavicle, acromion, spine of scapula to deltoid tubercle

    • Insertion: Middle of lateral surface of humerus (deltoid tuberosity)

    • Action: Abducts arm, anterior fibers flex and medial rotate, posterior fibers extend and lateral rotate

    • Location: 3-5 cm below acromion
