1. Platysma

  • Origin: fascia of the chest, deltoid muscles and pectoralis major
  • Insertion: inserts into the mandible and skin of the lower face
  • Action: Tightens the skin and pulls the corners of the lower lip down. It also is involved in facial expressions such as tension in the neck and grimacing.

2. Mentalis

  • Origin: originates from the incisive fossa of the mandible
  • Insertion: inserts into the skin of the chin
  • Action: it protrudes the lips and is involved in the action of pouting and wrinkling of chin

3. Orbicularis Oris

  • Origin: originates from the modiolus on each side of the mouth with it's deep fibers surrounding it
  • Insertion:  Inserts to the skin and mucous membrane of lips
  • Action: movement of lips such as kissing as it protrudes and compresses the lips

4. Corrugator Supercilii

  • Origin: originates from the medial end of the superciliary arch of the frontal bone
  • Insertion: inserts into the skin of the eyebrow above the middle part of the supraorbital margin
  • Action: draws the eyebrows medially and inferiorly and is involved in the expression called frowning

5. Orbicularis Oculi

  • Origin: nasal part of frontal bone, frontal process of maxilla, medial palpebral ligament, lacrimal bone
  • Insertion: skin of orbital region, lateral palpebral raphe, superior and inferior tarsal plates
  • Action: closes eyelids and compresses lacrimal sac

6. Occipitofrontalis 

  • Origin: originates from the epicranial aponeurosis
  • Insertion: inserts into the skin of the eyebrow
  • Action: lifts eyebrow and eyelid and produces wrinkles in forehead
