  1. It is immunization day at the health center. The first patient is a 2-month old well female infant who is scheduled for the following vaccinations: pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), pentavalent vaccine (Penta), and oral polio vaccine. PCV and Penta are given via intramuscular route

    1. Where are the sites of injection?

      1. Anterolateral part of the thigh

    2. What muscle is targeted in the injection?

      1. Vastus lateralis

    3. Write down its origin, insertion and action.

      1. Origin

        1. Originates from the greater trochanter and linea aspera of the femur

      2. Insertion

        1. Inserts to the patella through the quadriceps tendon

        2. Inserts to the tibial tuberosity through the patellar ligament

      3. Action

        1. Extends the leg at the knee joint

    4. How do you locate this area?

      1. Examine or palpate the muscle found below the greater trochanter, and right above the knee joint. After, divide it into three parts and administer the injection to the middle third portion. It is worth noting that the area is lateral to the thigh’s midpoint.

  1. The baby’s 65-year-old grandfather also came to the center because influenza vaccine is being offered to senior citizens. The flu vaccine is given intramuscularly.

    1. Which muscle is the preferred site for IM injection in this case?

      1. Deltoid

    2. Write down its origin, insertion and action.

      1. Origin

        1. Originates from the acromial extremity of the clavicle, acromion of the scapula, and spine of the scapula

      2. Insertion

        1. Inserts to the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus

      3. Action

        1. Its lateral fibers abduct the arms at the shoulder joint

        2. Next, the anterior fibers of the deltoid flex and rotate the arm medially at the shoulder joint

        3. Lastly, the posterior fibers extend and rotate the arms laterally at the shoulder joint

    3. How do you locate this area?

      1. To easily locate the area, first find the area of the acromion process (where the humerus and shoulder joint articulates). After palpating the bony structure, proceed to measure around 2.5 inches below the area to identify the injection site of the deltoid muscle.
