Platysma
Origin
Originates from the fascia over the deltoid and pectoralis major
Insertion
Inserts to the mandible. Blends with the muscles on the angle of the mouth, as well as the skin of the lower face
Action
The muscle depresses the mandible, and inferiorly and posteriorly draws the outer part of the lower lip.
Mentalis
Origin
Originates from the mandible, specifically its anterior incisive fossa
Insertion
Inserts to the skin of the chin
Action
This muscle is mainly involved in “pouting.” It elevates and pushes the lower lip forward, while also pulling the chin upwards.
Orbicularis Oris
Origin
Originates at the muscle fibers surrounding the opening of the mouth
Insertion
Inserts to the skin at the corner of the mouth
Action
Known as the “kissing” muscle, it closes and pushes the lips forward. It also compresses the lips against the teeth, and shapes it during speech.
Corrugator Supercilii
Origin
Originates from the medial end of the superciliary arch of the frontal bone
Insertion
Inserts to the skin of the eyebrow and medial forehead
Action
Involved in frowning; it wrinkles the forehead and draws the eyebrow inferiorly
Orbicularis Oculi
Origin
Originates from the medial wall of the orbit
Originates from the medial orbital margin and lacrimal sac
Insertion
Inserts to the circular path around the orbit
Inserts to the lateral palpebral raphe
Action
Closes the eye and eyelids, and aids the passage of tears
Frontal Belly
Origin
Originates from the epicranial aponeurosis
Insertion
Inserts to the skin superior to the supraorbital margin
Action
As seen in the image, this muscle is involved in raising the eyebrows and wrinkling the forehead. In addition, it also draws the scalp anteriorly
