Name 5 muscles which are affected and list its actions. Describe the mechanism of his muscle weakness. What other symptoms could the patient exhibit as a result of facial muscle weakness?

  • The five facial muscles that are greatly affected by Bell's Palsy or Facial Nerve Paralysis are the occipitofrontalis, corrugator supercilii, risorius, orbicularis oris, and buccinator.

  1. Occipitofrontalis – closes the eyes

  2. Corrugator Supercilii– wrinkle skin between the eyebrows (frowns)

  3. Risorius – it pulls the angle of the mouth back, like grimacing

  4. Orbicularis oris – closes the mouth

  5. Buccinator – keeps the cheek against the teeth during mastication or sucking

  • One of the nerves that controls muscles in the face becomes damaged or injured. Moreover, it is the dysfunction of the C7, which links your brain to the muscles that control facial expression.

  • He may experience:

    • difficulty in closing the eye

    • difficulty in eating

    • excessive tearing in one eye

    • pain around the jaw and the ear

    • difficulty smiling and making facial movements
