  • These nerves serve the muscles of facial expression, which include the frontalis, orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, buccinator, and platysma muscles. The frontalis muscle is responsible for elevating the eyebrows
  • The orbicularis oculi muscle closes the eyelids and assists in pumping the tears, and winking and forced squeezing
  • Orbicularis oris muscle has orofacial function (swallowing, sucking, whistling, chewing, vowel pronunciation, kissing)
  • The buccinator presses cheeks against the teeth during chewing. It helps the tongue to keep the bolus of food central in the oral cavity.
  • The main function of the platysma is to contribute to producing a myriad of facial expressions by lowering the corners of the mouth and lower lip.
