1. How the food changes consistency and form.
Once food enters the mouth, it is broken down physically into smaller pieces by chewing and mixed with saliva, which leads to the chemical digestion of starch into maltose. Then, when swallowed, the food mass is forced into the throat and esophagus by the tongue. After that, the food is delivered into the stomach through peristalsis. In the stomach, food is held and mixed with enzymes, continuing the breakdown process of food. Once it is processed enough, the food is now released into the small intestine. In the small intestine, food is mixed with digestive enzymes from the pancreas and liver, causing it to change its consistency and be broken down further into simple molecules. The food (in simple form) is then absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream, which transports it throughout the body. Lastly, waste products are passed through the large intestine and out of the body as stool.
2. How the body was able to absorb the nutrients from the food we eat.
In the gastrointestinal tract, food is broken down physically and chemically into smaller nutrient molecules. The nutrients from food are absorbed in the small intestines and passed into the bloodstream, which delivers them to the other parts of the body.
