REFLECTING ON THE LESSON
by GEORGETTE E. ZALDIVAR
Choose one concept in our lesson today, give a brief explanation about the concept and cite how would you apply this learning in your everyday life.
Throughout our lifespan, we will encounter multiple injuries; some more extreme than others. And, in such cases when our body encounters harmful stimuli, our immune system releases a defense response and initiates the healing process. As someone with allergies to insect bites and dust, it is often that I notice scabs or wounds suddenly emerging in most areas of my legs and arms. Hence, the concept of inflammation particularly piqued my interest among all others.
The process of inflammation is intricately designed in such a way that it repairs our bodily injury acutely in a manner that is fast by removing damaged tissue and destroying any foreign microorganisms. White blood cells in the body release substances during inflammation to defend themselves from foreign intruders. As a result, the area of injury or illness receives increased blood flow. Afterward, the stage of collagen formation begins, wherein harmful chemicals are neutralized and damaged areas are assisted by the formation of new connective tissues. The third and last stage of the process of inflammation includes the remodeling and maturation of the collagen fibers along the lines of stress. This is the phase where the tissue continues to restructure, strengthen, and enhance its cellular organization.
Knowing the aforementioned information, I have become more conscious of how the process of inflammation relates to my everyday dilemma of the constant materialization of wounds on my legs and arms as a result of insect bites and dirt allergies. Also, it helped significantly with my understanding of how our bodies deal with such triggers or injuries. With this new knowledge in mind, it is important that we keep track of our daily lifestyle and routines to ensure that nothing we do negatively affects the process of inflammation. For instance, our diet plays a significant role in this process; carbohydrates, meats, and fried foods increase inflammation; thus, to reduce inflammation, swap out such foods with fruits, vegetables, and nuts, which are known to help fight inflammation. Generally, the concept of inflammation teaches us how to be conscious of what we do every single day, keeping in mind to do the things that benefit our body and not do what we know or perceive to be harmful to our body.
