1. Briefly describe the process of inflammation in an area that has been traumatized.
Common symptoms of inflammation are pain, heat, swelling, and redness that we experience, which is triggered and caused by the body’s response to trauma.
Inflammation is then body’s response to trauma or when our body has an injured area. This response is triggered when trauma or damaged cells are detected, as such, the body sends immune cells to the affected area. This also includes increase in levels of cytokines and neutrophils, as well as releasing chemicals like histamine and kinin, which allows the blood vessels to widen and allow the immune cells to surround the damaged cells or tissue. The neutrophils then proceed to remove foreign material from the injury site, the metabolic rate of the tissue also increases to allow the body to start the other processes like repair. These are what cause the pain, heat, swelling, and redness that we experience.
2. Choose one type of Immunity (Innate and Humoral) and explain how its mechanism protects our body.
Innate immunity is given to us and is present from birth. This defense system’s main purpose is to defend our body from microbes and antigens, it tries to prevent it from entering the body, if ever there are microbes and/or antigens that were able to enter the body, this system tries to eliminates them.
For example, the skin is the first line of defense of the body when it comes to preventing microbes and/or antigens from entering the body. Then there is the cough reflex, when foreign bodies enter our sinuses, or when we have allergies. Then there is the chemical responses when microbes and/or antigens enter the body, the system activates the proteins and the defense cells to act upon and try to remove them from the body.
