Stress helps you meet your daily challenges and motivates you to reach your goals, ultimately making you a smarter, happier, and healthier person. However when you are stressed, what body reactions or clinical manifestations do you often experience? After studying the endocrine system and the stress response, can you explain how these clinical manifestations occur?

Personally, the most common bodily response that I experience during times of stress would be an increased heart rate and tense muscles. These are accompanied by other minor effects such as slight body aches, but ultimately, stress causes multiple sensations for the purpose of combatting and alleviating stress.

During a moment of stress, the body releases hormones that trigger different responses within the body. Specifically, the production and release of adrenaline consequently increase blood pressure along with our heart rate, which aids us to combat the stressful situations we are in, also known as our body’s fight or flight response.

Additionally, adrenaline also serves as the body’s way of being more alert to possible situations. Our muscles start to tense up in line with the aforementioned fight or flight response, so as to prepare ourselves to quickly react to the stressful situation (i.e. flee, escape).
