Based on the patient's condition, the facial (VII) nerve is the cranial nerve which was affected by the viral infection. The facial (VII) nerve handles all the muscles of facial expression, a small muscle in the middle ear, and two hyoid muscles. Due to the infection, it constructs paralysis of the facial muscles or so-called Bell's palsy. Whereas, once the facial nerves are affected, it will affect the sense of taste, smell, and hearing. Taste sensations are damaged because facial nerves serve as taste buds in the anterior two-thirds of the tongue.
