Based on my patient's symptoms, it appears that her VII Facial Nerve has been affected. Sensory sensations such as taste, proprioception, touch, pain, and temperature are all controlled by facial nerves. Facial nerve motors also control facial expression, tear secretion, and saliva production. Bell's Palsy refers to facial nerve damage and its symptoms. It is a unilateral paralysis of the facial expression muscles, and in my patient's case, they cannot move the muscles on the right side of their face or close their right eye. Because of the paralysis, patients with Bell's Palsy may experience loss of taste, droopy face on the entire side, and dry mouth.
