Facial (VII) Nerve

The Facial (VII) Nerve is a mixed cranial nerve considered to be the major motor nerve of the head. It functions for the taste from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, motor control of facial muscles, and tear and saliva secretion. Thus, injury or damage to this particular nerve because of viral infections could cause facial muscle paralysis, loss of taste, decreased salivation, and the inability to close eyes.
