Activity 3
1.
Sites of injection: Anterolateral thigh - right thigh (Penta) and left thigh (PCV)
Muscle: Vastus lateralis muscle
Origin: Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur
Insertion: Patella via quadriceps tendon and then tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
Action: All four heads extend leg at knee joint; rectus femoris muscle acting alone also flexes thigh at hip joint.
How do you locate this area?: We must first separate the muscle and locate the greater trochanter of the femur in order to find the intramuscular route. The vastus lateralis muscle's top boundary can be found a hand wide below the groin. A hand's length above the knee is where you can find the vastus lateralis muscle's bottom border. The best location for injection is along the side borders, which run from the middle of the anterior thigh to the middle of the lateral thigh. The skin at the injection site needs to be spread with two fingers between the injection site.
2.
Sites of injection: Upper arm
Muscle: Deltoid muscle
Origin: There is little room for error at the injection site because the deltoid mass is small compared to the other intramuscular injection sites. Finding the safe zone square is the first step; safe injection is guaranteed there. It is preferable to inject in the square's inner middle. One or two finger widths separate the acromion process from the top border of the deltoid region. The bottom line is located approximately from the fold of the axilla to the point where the deltoid muscle inserts. Lastly, from the side view, choose the center of the deltoid muscle for injection.
Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
Action: Lateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint
