  1. Platysma

  • Origin- subcutaneous tissue of infra- and supraclavicular regions

  • Insertion- lower mandible, skin of cheek region and lower lip, modiolus, orbicularis oris

  • Action- depresses mandible and mouth angle, tenses skin of the lower face and anterior neck 

  1. Mentalis

  • Origin- mandible 

  • Insertion- underneath the skin of the chin

  • Action- elevation and protrusion of lower lip 

  1. Orbicularis oris

  • Origin- medial maxilla and mandible, perioral skin and muscles, modiolus

  • Insertion- skin and mucous membrane of the lips

  • Action- shaping of lips

  1. Corrugator supercilii

  • Origin- medial end of superciliary arch 

  • Insertion- skin above the middle of supraorbital margin

  • Action- lowering eyebrows, creating vertical wrinkles

  1. Orbicularis oculi

  • Origin- frontal bone, medial palpebral ligament, lacrimal bone

  • Insertion- superior and inferior tarsal plates, and skin around the orbital region 

  • Action- closes eyelids, compresses lacrimal sac

  1. Occipitofrontalis

  • Origin- epicranial aponeurosis 

  • Insertion- underneath the skin of the forehead (frontal part); lateral ⅔ of the superior nuchal line (occipital part) 

  • Action- elevates the eyebrow and wrinkles the forehead (frontal part); retracts the scalp (occipital part)
