Action:

Flexes forearm at elbow joint

Supinates forearm at radioulnar joints 

Pronates forearm at radioulnar joints 

Innervation:

Radial nerve

 2. Throwing a baseball overhead

Muscle:

Pectoralis major

Deltoid

Latissimus dorsi

Action:

Adducts and medially rotates arm at shoulder joint. 

Flexion of anterior fibers and medially rotates arm at shoulder joint. 

Extends and adducts rotating arm at shoulder joint. 

Innervation:

Medial and lateral pectoral nerves

Axillary nerve

Thoracodorsal nerve. 

 

 3. Kicking a ball

Action:

Extends thigh at hip joint and laterally rotates thigh. 

Flexes and abducts thigh at hip joint (if by kicking sideways)

Flexes thigh at hip joint 

Innervation:

Inferior gluteal nerve

Superior gluteal nerve

 4. Doing sit-ups

Muscle:

Rectus Abdominis

Internal Oblique

Transversus abdominis

Action:

Flexes vertebral column and compresses abdomen.

Acting together, compress the abdomen and flex the vertebral column. 

Compresses abdomen. 

Innervation:

Thoracic spinal nerves T7-T-12

Thoracic spinal nerves (T8-t12). 

Thoracic spinal nerves (T8- T12). 

 

5. Walking

Muscle:

Gluteus maximus

Quadriceps

Plantaris

Action:

Extends thigh at hip joint and laterally rotates thigh. 

Straightens and extends knee

Plantar flexes foot at ankle joint and flexes leg at knee joint. 

Innervation:

Inferior gluteal nerve

Femoral nerve

Tibial nerve

 

6. Breathing 

Muscle:

Diaphragm

External intercostals

Internal intercostals

Action:

Contraction and relaxation of diaphragm. 

Contraction elevates ribs and increases anteroposterior and lateral dimension of thoracic cavity. 

Contraction draws adjacent ribs together (for forced exhalation)

Innervation:

Phrenic nerve

Thoracic spinal nerves

Thoracic spinal nerves (T2-T12).
