Week 3
by GEORGETTE E. ZALDIVAR

This is Hidilyn Diaz. She won the Philippines’ first ever Olympic gold medal in the clean and jerk weightlifting category for the 55-kg weight division during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Give 5 examples of muscles with isotonic contractions and 5 examples of muscles with isometric contractions during the activity in the gif below.

Isotonic contractions are muscular contractions that involve changes in the length of the muscles. That said, the muscles that demonstrate isotonic contractions, as performed by Hidilyn Diaz, are the following:

  1. Gluteus maximus;
  2. Rectus femoris;
  3. Adductor magnus;
  4. Quadriceps femoris; and
  5. Gastrocnemius.

Contrary to isotonic contractions, isometric contractions are muscular contractions in which the length of the muscle does not change. As seen in Hidilyn Diaz’s exhibition, the muscles that undergo isometric contraction are as follows:

  1. Trapezius;
  2. Subscapularis;
  3. Pectoralis major;
  4. Rectus abdominis; and
  5. Latissimus dorsi.
